Let Clayton inspire and inform your personal practice with this fundamental exploration of Breath, movement and dristhi (gazing point). Detailed explanation of the Traditional Sun Salutations, standing postures, seated postures, back bending and finishing postures will be given.
Suitable for those with a consistent and regular Ashtanga or Vinyasa Practice.
Evolutions and examples of the Jump Back and the Jump Through of the Ashtanga vinyasa system will be covered in detail. Technique and alignment of postures will be refined, allowing for efficiency of muscular force and correct breathing. Opening and finishing mantras will be explained.
This is a fantastic way to learn the Ashtanga foundations and introduce yourself to the self-paced personal practice called “Mysore Style” Ashtanga Yoga in the tradition of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, South India.
Schedule & Description
Session I: Saturday: 10:00 am – 12:30 pm
FOUNDATIONS OF ASHTANGA
This session will explore the fundamentals and details of correct breathing, sun salutations and all of the standing poses. Examples and tools for working on the jump back and jump through of the Ashtanga Vinyasa breath movement system will be covered in detail. Opening and closing mantras will be explained and chanted together with guided relaxation at the end.
Session II: Saturday: 2:00 pm – 4:30 pm
PRIMARY SERIES PART ONE
We will break down the first half of the primary series and the finishing postures. Foundations of technique and alignment will be discussed; modifications will be addressed where necessary. Continued detailed instruction of the Finishing postures is included here.
Session III: Sunday: 10:00 am – 12:30 pm
PRIMARY SERIES PART TWO
This morning session begins with some breathwork (pranayama) and a guided meditation. We will focus on the details of the Second Half of the primary series. Technique and alignment of postures will be refined, allowing for efficiency of muscular force, correct breathing and an increase in the flow of prana, our subtle vital energy.
Session IV: Sunday: 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm
TAKING IT FURTHER
This last session will review essential elements of Ashtanga yoga such as breath movement efficiency and injury prevention with a focus on back bending and an introduction to some of the accessible poses of the Intermediate (2nd) Series. Mysore Style Ashtanga will be explained and explored. We will end with a restorative and refreshing Yoga Nidra session and short Kirtan.
